Motorists hit out at choking diesel fumes

Article Abstract:

The UK government has launched a 'Don't Choke Britain' campaign aimed to reduce the amount of traffic congestion and air pollution caused by cars. Transport minister, Gavin Strang, urged motorists to give up their cars for one day to break the habit of driving. However motoring organisations, such as the AA and RAC, have criticised the campaign as being 'anti-car'. They say that the government should concentrate on reducing the pollution created by older diesel powered lorries and buses. The AA claim that 40% of the particulate pollution in the UK comes from 500,000 such vehicles, and as such the 23mn cars should not be targeted.

The UK government's Housing Bill released on 13 December 2000 will safeguard home buyers from aspects of gazumping, but will not take effect until 2003. The Bill will oblige estate agents to offer potential buyers a pack featuring a survey of the property's condition and the title deeds. However, the government encountered criticism for deferring the legislation for three years, amid claims that its move would also increase the cost of selling a house.
