The arresting sight of Tories defying the winter torpor

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party has seized the initiative as politicians begin to prepare for 2001. Ann Widdecombe and William Hague appear to be attempting to link the familiar issues of crime and punishment, policing, the euro and asylum-seekers into a coherent whole.

Why many Tories will be backing Labour this spring

Article Abstract:

It is possible that the UK Conservative party will lose more parliamentary seats to the Liberal Democrats. In at least 71 seats, the Conservative candidates and incumbent MPs will be restrained in their criticism of the Labour party. The better Labour performs nationally, the better for these Conservatives.

Mr Hague talks of common sense, but our party is starting to commit suicide

Article Abstract:

It can be argued that the UK Conservative party and its leader, William Hague, are failing to come to terms with political reality. They are becoming increasingly Eurosceptic, and this will seriously damage their standing in the run-up to the next general election. It appears that the fate of the Conservative party will depend on its ability to widen its appeal to young people, Asians, blacks, Europhiles, homosexuals and women.
