Murderer to get sex swap on the NHS

Article Abstract:

John Pilley, who is serving a life sentence for kidnapping, will have an orchidectomy at the expense of the National Health Service in Apr 1999. He will be the first prisoner in the UK to have gender reassignment surgery, having taken legal action against prison officials who seemed to be preventing him pursuing his request for genital surgery. Pilley's case will pave the way for a number of other prisoners to undergo sex change treatment, including convicted murderer Matthew Richardson.

Britain's wife-beating epidemic is revealed

Article Abstract:

Battered women in the UK are becoming less likely to simply endure their situation without seeking help. More and more of them are turning to housing officers, the police, social workers and hospitals, and this is creating costs of 1 billion pounds sterling a year, according to a study commissioned by the Children's Society and Hackney Safer Cities. It was established that domestic violence can take many forms and that there are many different outcomes.
