Article Abstract:

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch is very keen to establish a presence in Germany, having so far failed to gain much ground in continental Europe. For this reason, he is cultivating links with German Social Democrat leader Gerhard Schroder, who is likely to become Chancellor in Sep 1998. He is to make a very large cash investment in television station Vox, with the aim of boosting its market share from the current 3% to 10%. Schroder takes a turn to the right

Article Abstract:

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder has been elected Social Democrat Chmn following the resignation of Finance Minister Oskar Lafontaine. However, he won only 23 of the 32 votes available, and he will face considerable challenges as he seeks to mould the party. Lafontaine had attracted great loyalty from almost all party members, whereas Schroder has a much more distant and business-like relationship with most members. He has already been forced to emphasize that Lafontaine's tax reforms will not be abandoned.
