Mystery as Burma frees dissident

Article Abstract:

The military regime of Burma has held dissident leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for nearly six years, but has now released her unconditionally, to the complete surprise of those who have been monitoring the situation. Some observers believe that the military leaders may feel that their position is now so strong that they no longer have to be concerned about any threat from her. Human rights groups have expressed the hope that she will be permitted to participate in the country's political life.

Article Abstract:

Recent investigations have revealed that strategic nuclear equipment is being illegally removed from high security units in the former Soviet republics and secretly transported to Afghanistan and the Pakistani border city of Peshawar. It is believed that Iran has purchased enriched uranium through Russian diplomats based in Afghanistan. The CIA claims that Iran is building up its own nuclear weapons programme and purchases a large amount of smuggled nuclear material.
