Name games in early learning

Article Abstract:

Moves by the Pre-School Playgroups Association to change its name to the Pre-School Learning Alliance reflect wider changes which are taking place in the playgroup movement in the UK. The Alliance has seen a rise in its membership over recent years to almost 20,000 playgroups, and has persuaded the government to agree to funding playgroups on the same basis as nursery schools through the new nursery voucher scheme. Playgroups feel that they are particularly important because they encourage parents to become directly involved, giving them the confidence to participate in their child's education.

Help me make it through the night

Article Abstract:

Establishing a strict bedtime routine is the best way to ensure that a young child sleeps well throughout the night. There should be a period of calm before bedtime, during which the parent talks quietly to the child and possibly discusses any fears the child may have. The child should not have to use a breast or bottle feed to make it sleep, as it will require further feeding to make it go back to sleep if it wakes during the night. A crying child should be briefly reassured, but gradually longer intervals should be allowed to build up before returning to a crying child.

Testing times for five-year-olds

Article Abstract:

The UK government's announcement that it is considering plans to introduce baseline testing, which would assess the abilities of children as they start school, has attracted mixed reactions. Such testing would allow an accurate assessment of the effectiveness of primary schools, and the results of testing at the age of five could be compared with results from national curriculum tests at the ages of seven and 11. Models of baseline assessment are already being developed by some local authorities and individual schools.
