Nations unite to share in stock market

Article Abstract:

The Bourse Regionale des Valeurs Mobilieres (BRVM) in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, connects seven French-speaking countries in West Africa. Some 35 stocks have been listed so far, of which 34 are from Cote d'Ivoire itself. BRVM has a central unit, but there is also a national branch in each of the participating countries. There are also stockbroking companies in each country. These companies have a monopoly of business transacted. Some prospective new entrants are already private companies, while others are state-owned companies designated for privatization.

'Independent' team's hopes for 1998

Article Abstract:

The stocks regarded by the Independent newspaper as most likely to perform well in 1998 are those with good growth or recovery prospects. The strongest growth is likely to be seen by a company which is the subject of a takeover bid, probably in the financial sector. However, it is extremely difficult to predict takeover bids. The leisure, outsourcing and nursing home sectors will probably perform well, but it is worth avoiding industrial stocks with heavy exposure to sterling.
