Nature is red in tooth and claw - and so is politics

Article Abstract:

The vast majority of Britons, even those living in rural areas, favour a ban on hunting with dogs. The Labour government is now working towards introducing a ban, and will also consider measures to rescue the farming industry and identify how planning and transport politics can be used to improve the economic status of rural communities. The Countryside Alliance should distance itself from those opposed to a ban on hunting, and should instead seek to encourage policies designed to revive farming.

On the catwalk in Gujarat

Article Abstract:

The Asiatic lion has now become very rare, and even visitors to the Sasan Gir Lion Sanctuary in the forests and grasslands of Gir, Gujarat, India, may not see any lions. Visitors staying at the Sasan Gir village can participate in excursions into the park, and will see a range of wildlife, including monkeys, deer and peacocks. Lucky visitors may also see leopards, but the chances of seeing any lions seem to be quite remote.

Supermodels claw riches from beyond the catwalk

Article Abstract:

Toy manufacturer Hasbro plans to launch supermodel dolls in summer 1996. These will resemble Claudia Schiffer, Karen Mulder and Naomi Campbell, and these women will receive a royalty of at least 5% of the wholesale price of each doll sold. This move highlights the extent to which the modelling industry is changing, with growing emphasis now being placed on developing the fame of supermodels in new areas.
