Negligence claims against NHS could hit 2.3bn
Article Abstract:
The National Audit Office has warned the NHS to improve its assessment of its liabilities, in view of the escalating costs of clinical negligence claims. When the likely cost of unsettled, unpaid and outstanding cases is taken into account, the final total could add up to GB 2.3bn. Attention has also been drawn to the problem of prescription fraud, which costs the health service up to GB 115mn out of the total GB 4.5bn bill. Looking at the overall financial situation, health authorities had an accumulated deficit of GB 791mn at the end of the 1996/97 financial year and 42 out of 100 health authorities were in serious financial difficulties.

Fears of Labour purge as press officers quit Whitehall
Article Abstract:
The UK government has seen the resignation of seven senior information officers since the general election in May 1997. The most recent resignation has been that of Jonathan Haslam, head of information at the Department of Education and Employment. He was press secretary to former Prime Minister John Major. There is now growing speculation that the resignations are the reflection of a deliberate policy by Alastair Campbell, press secretary to Prime Minister Tony Blair, and minister without portfolio Peter Mandelson.
