New tables will lift the lid on university life

Article Abstract:

The UK Higher Education Funding Council will from autumn 1999 issue information from which it will be possible to compile tables rating universities in areas such as student drop-out rates. This development has been greeted with some caution within higher education, but there is a feeling that it is preferable for official statistics to be used to compile league tables than for the media to devise its own ratings. The Dept for Education and Employment and the Treasury aim to use performance indictors to encourage universities to become more efficient.

How do you rate a university subject?

Article Abstract:

Senior executives at both old and new universities in the UK have reacted negatively to plans by the Quality Assurance Agency to rate the teaching of subjects by using differentiated judgements on a four-point scale. The judgements could be used to produce league tables, which are widely opposed. There is also concern about plans to inspect universities with a good performance record less thoroughly than others. Many observers are concerned about the future autonomy of universities.

The number of students applying for UK universities and colleges in 2001 is 373,261, up by only 2,881 from 2000. It is clear that the 11,000 new places allocated by the government for 2001 and 2002 will not be filled.
