The race to wire up the world

Article Abstract:

The recently arranged alliance between Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation and US long-distance telecommunications operator MCI could prove extremely influential. With this deal, Murdoch will become the first media magnate to control a full set of multi-media gobal alliances which cover all the potential future ways of gaining access to ordinary households. He will now be in a position to combine broadcasting and telephony, rather than specialising in a particular type of new media.
