Next door to Nietzsche's children

Article Abstract:

The two-day court sitting at Karlsruhe, Germany, in Jul 1993 discussed the Maastricht treaty, but no decision is expected until the autumn. A Bonn report considered that public opinion might force its approval, although some Germans think of Germany as isolationist. However, the federal government would be relinquishing powers which belong to the Lander, not to the government, if it approved the Treaty on European Union. EC laws are not controlled by a democratically elected parliament, as required by Germany's Basic Law.

Why Governor Patten has to go

Article Abstract:

Governor of Hong Kong Chris Patten threatens to ignore China as he tries to show that the Sino-British Declaration of 1984 was meant to commit a respect for Hong Kong's freedom and autonomy. It was not previously considered to suggest a democratic future, although it was deliberately ambiguous. Margaret Thatcher and Sir Geoffrey Howe agreed to the Joint Declaration because Peking threatened to proceed unilaterally after the expiry of the 99-year lease of the Territories in 1997.

The horse throws off his rider

Article Abstract:

The suspension of the European Exchange-Rate Mechanism (ERM) and the demise of the Franco-German accord means that the Maastricht Treaty is dead. European countries apart from Holland are adopting an unrealistic approach by deluding themselves that complete European union is eminent. The UK has just ratified the treaty despite the lack of universal faith in its potential success. The UK government should stop deceiving itself and lead a new era of cooperation.
