No rest for the afflicted

Article Abstract:

Male violence is a fascinating subject, according to filmmaker Paul Schrader. His long-standing preoccupation with male violence drew him to the novel by Russell Banks on which his latest film, 'Affliction,' is based. This novel also attracted Schrader because of the complexity of its narrative and its insights into issues such as the elusiveness of memory. He feels that this film portrays the disintegration of a man, along with his difficulties with male violence and his father.
