No stopping the single currency juggernaut

Article Abstract:

The prospects for creating European monetary union seemed uncertain at the beginning of 1996. However, it is now clear that European monetary union will become a reality, and this represents a very significant turning point. Preparations for monetary union will continue to be made, despite serious obstacles, especially as the basic political will for monetary union now seems to exist in Europe. Even in the UK, there is now a recognition that monetary union will actually take place.

Transatlantic fish war goes Canada's way

Article Abstract:

A new European fisheries agreement is set to end the current dispute between Spain and Canada over fish quotas. The deal will strengthen the enforcement of fisheries conservation measures and increase the Spanish quota of Greenland halibut, the species which sparked off the dispute. However, the European Union quota is likely to rise to only around 12,000 tons, from more than 40,000 tons in 1994, and this will be seen as a victory by Canada.

Transatlantic rift haunts Nato

Article Abstract:

Nato should make efforts to move away from focusing on the threat from the former Soviet Union, adapting itself to deal with other dangers, according to secretary-general Willy Claes. It should be prepared to react to any likely outcome of the conflict in former Yugoslavia, and should consider how it would deal with any extension of the conflict. The possible enlargement of Nato is another issue which requires careful attention.
