Norman's wisdom - and Turkey's delight

Article Abstract:

Oxford University is in a poor state, with graduate teaching being of a low standard and staff underpaid, according to Norman Stone, who is leaving his position as professor of modern history at the university. He is to spend four months of the year as head of a Russian-Turkish institute in Ankara, but will retain close links with academic life in the UK. Stone has been a controversial figure for some time, with some observers accusing him of seeking fame and media coverage at the expense of academic excellence.

A year on, arms-to-Iraq report gathers dust

Article Abstract:

Many of the conclusions of Sir Richard Scott's three-year inquiry into the arms-to-Iraq affair have still not been addressed by the UK government, according to the international pressure group Saferworld. This view has gained support from three senior armed forces officers, who claim that there are strong military arguments in favour of strictly regulated arms sales to regions where there is tension and instability. The Labour party is calling for a Freedom of Information Act to end secrecy in government.

Creating fear and loathing on the campaign trail

Article Abstract:

UK advertising agencies believe that advertising during the general election campaign will generally be aggressive in nature. Observers feel that the weak nature of the Conservative party at present leaves it no choice but to be directly critical of the opposition, rather than to focus on positive messages. It is possibly that political advertising in the UK will follow directions already taken in the US, where highly personal attacks are common.
