Not much cheer at the local off-licence

Article Abstract:

The merger by Allied Domecq and Whitbread of their Victoria Wine and Thresher off-licence chains will bring savings of between 10 million pounds sterling and 20 million pounds sterling a year. The merged operation will have 3,000 outlets and sales of 1.3 billion pounds sterling a year. This comes at a time when the UK's traditional off-licences face growing pressure from supermarkets and convenience stores. The large supermarkets hold 65% of the market for take-home drinks, with specialized off-licences at 31%.

CBI director-general Howard Davies has Treasury experience and will submit 1993 budget proposals arguing for any tax increases to be kept to a minimum.
