Not so easy listening on Radio 2

Article Abstract:

BBC Radio 2 has traditionally had a rather negative image, being associated with the tastes of the middle aged and elderly. However, it has managed to avoid the controversy which has affected other BBC radio stations over recent years, and has been shown to be the most popular station in the UK in terms of audience share. Problems have begun to emerge recently, however. The station has a new controller, and programmes have been reorganised, prompting complaints from loyal listeners. There have been particular objects to efforts to attract younger listeners.

Beware of the dog

Article Abstract:

Author James Ellroy regards himself as the 'Demon Dog of American Literature,' writing novels dealing with controversial issues such as obsessive sex, drugs and corruption. He claims that he does not really write his books, but merely acts as a channel for Barko, his bull terrier. He has established a strong image as a performer, and this comes across in his latest work, a television film called 'White Jazz.'

Fashion be damned

Article Abstract:

Novelist Christopher Priest has always been rather cynical about literary awards, which he believes tend to bring publicity but no financial reward. He has a rather anxious personality, which is sometimes reflected in his writing, but is not keen to move in conventional literary circles. His books have elements of science fiction in them, and he regards Orwell as one of his main literary examples.
