Now Nimes is wearing designer labels

Article Abstract:

Jean Bousquet, couturier and owner of Cacherel, became mayor of his home town of Nimes in 1983 and planned town development plans involving decentralisation and glamorous architecture. Foster Associates designed the Mediatheque, a facility including a library, cinema, auditorium, conference rooms and art gallery. The nine-story steel, concrete, stone and glass building is to open in 1993. Vittorio Gregotti of Milan designed the new sports stadium, completed in 1988, which includes a 20,000-seat football stadium surrounded by gymnastics, basketball, tennis and martial arts centres. The Roman amphitheatre was given a metal and glass covering so that it could be used all year. Social building programmes are next and commercial development is planned on an edge-of-town site.

Cholera cure? You're wearing it

Article Abstract:

Filtering water through four layers of sari material cuts the number of cholera vibrios by more than 99%, according to research undertaken by a team of scientists headed by Rita Colwell from the University of Maryland. This approach has the potential to save many lives in countries where cholera is still rife and where other solutions, such as immunisation or boiling water before use, are uneconomic. Preliminary field trials are to begin in Bangladesh in 1997.

Why MS sufferers are wearing spacesuits

Article Abstract:

A spacesuit designed by NASA may help relieve the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The suit called the Mark VII Microclimate suit was designed for the space programme and also used in the Gulf War. The lightweight suit is attached to a portable cooling system which can cool core body temperatures by one or two degrees Farenheit. This cooling can relieve some of the symptoms suffered by MS patients such as fatigue and muscle weakness.
