Now you can paint your listed building without demolishing it

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Circular 14/97 directive should in theory make it easier for owners of listed buildings and houses in conservation areas to make changes to their houses. It has now been established that alterations to these houses do not require consent, whereas demolition does. However, alterations which have an impact on the character of the building still require special consent. The onus is now on the owners of these buildings to decide whether to apply for listed building consent for changes that do not go as far as full demolition.

Another bank holiday and it's open house

Article Abstract:

Families who live in large historic homes generally accept that it is necessary to open the house to the public in order to be able to afford to maintain it. They sometimes find it hard to adapt to strangers looking round their home, but in most cases their children are very flexible, realising that they cannot go in certain rooms when they are open to the public. They welcome being able to tell visitors about the history of the house, but get tired of answering the same questions all the time.

Cementing the future

Article Abstract:

The renovation of St Anne's Court, a Grade 2-star listed building in Chertsey, England, has involved treating decaying reinforced concrete. The building, designed by Raymond McGrath, was completed in 1936, at a time when reinforced concrete was being widely used but nobody was aware that a chemical reaction would cause it to deteriorate in later years. The concrete has been repaired and has now been protected by being soaked in Ferroguard, a steel protection fluid.
