The Right may yet rule the Nineties

The expansion of the New Right in the 1980s seemed unstoppable, but general disillusionment with its views emerged in the early 1990s. Now, radical conservatism seems to be enjoying a revival. In the US, the Right won the mid-term polls under Newt Gingrich, while in the UK it has launched an open challenge for control of the Conservative party. The Conservative left is now in disarray, with the right being the focus on ideas and momentum.

John Major's decision to resign as leader of the Conservative Party, in the hope of being re-elected with stronger support, has a wider significance than simply being an effort to regain party unity. It is also significant for the future of Conservatism as a whole. MPs are now being called upon to decide whether they wish to preserve unity on the present basis, or whether the party should be rebuilt under new policies and a new leader.
