Article Abstract:

The UK Lord Chief Justice Lord Lane resigned on Feb 25 1992. Lane has been criticised for perpetuating the failures of the judicial system. He worked for 20 years as a barrister on the Midland and Oxford Circuit becoming a High Court judge in 1966. He became a Court of Appeal judge in 1974 and a Law Lord in 1979. His main achievements were to aknowledge that a husband can rape his wife, the support of strict sentences for rape and violent crimes and the introduction of more uniformity to sentencing procedures.

Carmen Proetta eludes revenge of the press

Article Abstract:

Carmen Proetta, 48, was falsely arrested for possession of drugs after she witnessed the SAS killing of IRA terrorists in Gibraltar in 1988, and still suffers harassment four years later. Newspapers published libellous articles about her after she appeared on Thames Television's documentary 'Death on the Rock.' Mrs Proetta, a court translator, lives in a modest bungalow in San Pedro, southern Spain. Gibraltar police have refused her a licence to sail her boat and frequently tow her car away.

Director of Custody with the Prison Department Philippa Drew finds excellent aspects in the work of every prison. Violence and lawlessness are not typical. Good staff-prisoner relations are essential. Female staff help destroy the macho culture of prisons. The report by Lord Justice Woolf recommends reinforcing family ties and creating links with the community. Judge Tumim's report has initiated drug and drink clinics in prison.
