Once upon a time I, too, thought business was bad

Article Abstract:

Many Britons still have negative views about business, seeing it as oppressing ordinary people. In contrast, the public services are seen positively as doing their best with limited funding. A few people have presented new visions of business and the public services, but these have not becoming integrated into public discourse. However, some of the proposals put forward by Chancellor Gordon Brown in his 1999 pre-budget report seemed to have links with a future in which characteristics such as flexibility and innovation are encouraged.

The amazing thing is that there is not more violence on our streets

Article Abstract:

The UK has an open society in which it is relatively easy for ordinary people to meet with others to draw up extremist plots. Against this background, it is highly surprising that there are not more bomb explosions in the UK. The recent nail bomb attacks in London, England, were probably the work of the same group of lunatics who have always been around. There is no widespread support for the far-right or for those who plant bombs. The recent bombings should not prompt a rise in pessimism and despair about modern society.
