One Old Master, two artists and three auctions. The story of a saleroom farce

Article Abstract:

There are significant pitfalls facing art collectors, especially in the Old Masters market, where many works are unsigned and undocumented. This problem has been highlighted by the case of a painting sold by Robin Duthy in 1993. Auction house Christie's sold it as being attributed to Flemish artist Pieter Casteels III, and it raised 28,000 pounds sterling. It was subsequently sold for 48,000 pounds sterling as being definitely by Casteels, and was then sold again for 89,000 pounds sterling, attributed this time to the circle of Dutch artist Melchior d'Hondecoeter.

Woofie is saved and so joins the great British pantheon of animals as heroes

Article Abstract:

The High Court in Edinburgh, Scotland, has ruled that a cross-collie bitch called Woofie who had been convicted under the Dangerous Dogs Act in Peterhead Sheriff Court and faced death by lethal injection should be saved. This case arose after a complaint was lodged by a postman who had a confrontation with the dog. The fervour of the campaign to save Woofie reflects the fact that Britons have frequently become extremely attached to animals.
