UK: POPULATION GROWTH ENVISAGED

Article Abstract:

The UK's population is predicted to rise between 1998 and 2021 by 4.4mn, with 50% of the growth expected to come from immigrants as opposed to people born in this country, according to the Office of National Statistics' Population Trends report. It is projected that by 2028 and for the first time since records were kept, deaths from natural causes will outstrip births, although inward migration will lead to the UK population increasing to 65mn by 2036. Net inward migration hit a record 178,000 in 1998, the report released on 28 March 2000 noted. Forecasts that 95,000 people per year will move to the UK to live are founded on the number of people undertaking short-term visits and the international passenger survey.
