Ordinary objects of desire

Article Abstract:

Artist Joseph Cornell brought together discarded scraps and presented them in unusual ways. The resulting works were quite like art, but their value to Cornell's audience was to do with their being artless. He seemed to imply that it is possible to create order in your life by paying attention to small, apparently useless items. He was particularly well known for his 'boxes,' which were most like art because they had a front and a frame. The objects contained in them made observers wonder what they meant to Cornell.

St George - a patron saint for Europe?

Article Abstract:

St George's Day seems to have become a focus for efforts by the English to reclaim their identity as Scotland and Wales seek devolution, the British empire fades and continental Europe becomes increasingly powerful. The symbolism associated with St George is very complex, particularly as he was possibly a third century Cappadocian, or what would now be called a Turk. His image was widespread in Europe from the 13th century, and he is the patron saint of several European countries.

Who are you?

Article Abstract:

The Who's rock opera 'Quadrophenia,' which was first released as an album in 1973 and then became popular again as a film in 1978, is now to be performed by the remainer of The Who at Earls Court in London, England. This music will no longer have the ability to shock as it did in the 1970s, but is still likely to be extremely satisfying. It will have gained certain qualities with age, and will not be spoilt by the fact that the members of The Who have aged too.
