Oriental vision puts life into Welsh valley of steel; The last British garden festival could be the best

Article Abstract:

The Welsh Garden Festival in Ebbw Vale opens on May 1 1992 on the site of the steelworks plant which closed in 1978. It is the fifth British garden festival and expects two million visitors. Garden festivals originated in Germany and the idea is also successful in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, Canada and the United States. The festival sites leave large, permanent areas of green space, whereas in Britain, the government insists on site redevelopment for housing and industry instead of greenery.

A new and growing power in the land

Article Abstract:

Privatisation of the UK's utilities was intended to make them more efficient and to reduce political influence over the nationalised industries. In the decade which has passed since the first wave of privatisations, political influence has indeed been eliminated, but the former utilities now seem to be under the control of the regulators instead. The regulators have become the enemies of privatisation, and are subjecting the privatised concerns to wide-reaching controls.
