Our real role models are drunks, failures and lunatics

Article Abstract:

The UK government believes that young people should be offered positive role models to encourage them to make the most of their abilities. However, it is possible to argue that the whole concept of role models is flawed. In fact, young people may derive more benefit from having a negative role model, whose example they become determined not to follow, than a positive one. Most people have heroes, but they choose their own heroes, rather than admiring these people because they have been told that they ought to.

On top of the world

Article Abstract:

Tromso, Norway, is the most northerly town of any size in Europe. This gives it a strong frontier atmosphere. The main industry in the town is fishing, and its harbour offers many interesting sights. There is a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere, and local people are very friendly. Tromso acts as a major departure point for Arctic expeditions, and is also visited by cruise ships, many of which now travel north slowly from Bergen, Norway.
