Out of the mouths of babes and Teletubbies

Article Abstract:

The great popularity of Teletubbies dolls as gifts for Christmas 1997 in the UK was not even predicted by toy industry experts. The dolls, based on the BBC children's television programme, have been selling extremely well, and a black market in them has even emerged. The world created by the television programme, which is slow and benign, seems very strange to adults, but actually appeals greatly to young children. It is believed that the programme attracts around 2 million viewers, but the BBC's audience research does not cover viewers aged under five.

The lioness in winter

Article Abstract:

Former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher continues to attract mixed views. She remains extremely popular in the US, where she can earn large sums of money at speaking engagements. However, some observers in the UK believe that she is losing the great sharpness of mind for which she was once renowned. She tries to emphasize her human qualities, such as caring for her family, but cannot disguise the fact that she is really more committed to politics. She continues to work extremely hard, even though she is now 72.

Charming homes to hide in

Article Abstract:

President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire has for many years lived in great luxury. He is worth an estimated 6 billion pounds sterling, and has homes in many different countries. It is widely believed that a large part of his wealth has come illegally from the companies which export cobalt, copper, diamonds and uranium from Zaire. His extravagant lifestyle contrasts very sharply with that of the vast majority of ordinary people in Zaire. His future may be in doubt as rebel troops increase their hold on the country.
