Out with the old, in with ... ?

Article Abstract:

A forthcoming change in the rules for teachers' retirement in the UK has prompted large numbers of teachers to seek early retirement as soon as possible, as they are aware that it may be very hard to obtain early retirement when the new rules come into force. The government is confident that the new rules will lead to far fewer teachers taking early retirement, and for this reason has cut teacher training places. Opponents of the changes claim that the teachers forced to remain at work will not be able to make a full contribution, as they will be too tired and stressed.

Queuing up for GNVQs

Article Abstract:

Many young people have welcomed the opportunity to take the vocationally orientated General National Vocational Qualifications, with more than 7,000 having signed up for the science GNVQ in 1995. Bu autumn 1995, around 250,000 students aged 16-18 will have chosen the 11 GNVQ subjects, higher than originally predicted by the government. However, university teachers have doubts about the wisdom of choosing GNVQs instead of A-levels. They are particularly not convinced that the practical GNVQ approach prepares students adequately for degree-level studies.

Degrees that almost guarantee jobs

Article Abstract:

The increased volatility of the UK employment market is forcing students to consider their future career options when they are deciding what to study at university. There are still reasonably good employment prospects for graduates, but it is important that graduates can offer skills that are of specific value to potential employers. Graduates should also ensure that they can show sound core transferable skills. For many careers, further study will be required.
