Paris and Bonn set course for 'Euro.' (moves to encourage economic growth and keep monetary union plans on schedule)

Article Abstract:

Germany and France have responded to the growing association in the minds of ordinary Europeans between high unemployment and economic decline and moves by European Union governments to meet the conditions of the Maastricht treaty for the launch of a single currency. They have issued plans for stimulating their weakening economies, for creating employment and for ensuring that plans for monetary union remain on schedule. They hope that both countries will be able to meet the Maastricht conditions and that ordinary people will accept the wisdom of having a single currency.

Is 1999 disappearing into the 21st century?

Article Abstract:

A number of recent developments have fuelled the arguments of those who feel that it would be very unwise to go ahead with the launch of a single European currency, which is scheduled for Jan 1999. In the UK, Eurosceptics feel that participation in monetary union is increasingly unlikely, while social unrest in France is also casting a shadow over French participation. However, monetary union remains an extremely important policy, and it will take more than this to persuade its supporters to abandon it.

Germany's fears blow monetary union off course

Article Abstract:

There is now a growing belief among representatives of the financial community that the European Union may fail to meet its target of implementing monetary union in Jan 1999. There are many political and economic issues still to be addressed, and a crisis is now developing in which France, Germany, Belgium and Italy are most deeply involved. The conflict over monetary union could damage the very identity of the European Union.
