Part-time schooling: dream or reality?

Article Abstract:

Many education experts in the UK believe that part-time and flexi-schooling could be a valuable educational tool in the future. It is possible that specialist schools with high levels of information technology provision will encourage pupils to study at home. Other possible approaches include dividing a school's pupil population into several different groups, with one group remaining at home at any one time, and operating a shift system, with the school remaining open for 12 hours a day. In the US, Charter and private alternative schools have even gone as far as to offer flexible learning programmes.

How parents can learn to talk to the enemy

Article Abstract:

Relations between parents and teachers can often be tense. Parents may feel that they are not being consulted fully by teachers and that they are being blamed for their child's behaviour. Similarly, teachers may have negative views about parents, feeling that they are negligent or aggressive. Problems can arise because teachers seem to be in a position of power, holding information to which parents cannot easily gain access. There are many reasons why parents may be reluctant to attend meetings with teachers, including low self-esteem and the fear that they will be insulted.

Governesses: are they the answer to parents' prayers?

Article Abstract:

Home education is becoming increasingly common in both the US and the UK, especially as parents become concerned about violence, bullying and drugs in schools and about the ability of schools to cope with children who have special educational needs. Within this context, more parents are considering employing a governess or tutor. In some cases, families are cooperating to set up small educational units. Some qualified teachers are keen to switch to tutoring in order to escape the pressures of the formal school environment.
