Physician, heal thyself

Article Abstract:

The British Medical Association and other organizations representing the medical profession in the UK recognize that there is a serious problem with insensitive or insulting behaviour by medical professionals. In some cases, comments that cause offence appear to be attempts at jokes that go wrong. However, it is clear that there is a culture of tolerance among doctors about amused contempt for patients. There are now signs that greater emphasis is being placed on communications skills for medical professionals.

'I'm afraid the doctor won't see you now.'

Article Abstract:

The UK's doctors must work under great pressure, aware that there are always many patients waiting to consult them. In turn, patients often feel that they must overcome many barriers simply in order to be able to see their doctor. In some cases, patients take up far too much of their doctor's time for trivial reasons, while in other cases patients fail to make it clear that they really do need to see the doctor, thus creating more serious problems at a later stage.

Lessons in rude health

Article Abstract:

There are some doctors in the UK who are arrogant and insulting towards their patients. More attention is being given to the issue of doctors' professional competence, but so far little consideration has been given to doctors' behaviour towards their patients. Medical schools now teach communication skills, but this training is offered at the idealistic, pre-clinical stage, before students have really gained much exposure to patients.
