Pizza man swallows the Ivy as top restaurant chains grow ever fatter

Article Abstract:

Belgo has acquired a group which includes Le Caprice and The Ivy, two restaurants in London, England. There has been increased demand for stylish restaurants serving Mediterranean food. Demand has risen as the 1990s recession eased. Upmarket chains offer predictability, though some critics argue that they lack personal service. Social change has affected eating patterns, and restaurants are used more often than before, when pubs were popular choices for younger people to have a meal in.

Of all the cities in all the world, Dublin has to be the one short of pubs

Article Abstract:

Visitors to Dublin, Ireland, gain the impression that the city has many pubs. In fact, Dublin has 29% of Ireland's population but only 9% of its pubs. This is because a 1902 law, supported by the Catholic Church, makes it almost impossible to open new licensed premises in Dublin. Furthermore, a 1960s law that prevents a new pub from being opened within one mile of an existing one applies to parts of the city that are still classified as rural areas.
