Poetry, for crying out loud

Article Abstract:

The British Council has linked with publisher Bloodaxe Books to develop 'The Poetry Quartets' project, which involves cassette recordings of poets reading their own work. This comes at a time when it has become common for poets to read their work in public. It is certainly true that poems are humanized and placed in context when they are read aloud, but it can be argued that the voicing of poems is not necessarily always positive. This is particularly the case if the poet is not a good reader and cannot adequately interpret his or her own work.

Lost in translation

Article Abstract:

Translator and poet Michael Hamburger regrets the fact that literary critics focus on his influence as a translator, tending to overlook his poetry. He emphasizes that he has been writing poems since he was a teenager, and regards writing poetry as his main activity. He can translate all the time, but cannot write poetry all the time. He believes that he has been able to separate his translating work completely from his own writing.
