Postcards from the proscenium

Article Abstract:

Theatre critics face a particular challenge because the production on which they are commenting is only temporary, in contrast with a film, a television programme or a work of art. Theatre criticism must seek to capture and analyze the spirit of the production, but critics must avoid consciously writing for posterity. Theatre criticism is also different from other forms of criticism in that it can change the nature of the work on which it comments, as a play can never be fixed, unlike a film or a work of art.

Court in the act of writing

Article Abstract:

The Royal Court theatre in London, England, has developed a strong reputation for encouraging new writing. Its 1997 New Writers' Season opens with a French play, Christophe Pellet's 'One More Wasted Year,' and includes programmes of rehearsed readings and context-providing seminars. Many new writers have come through the theatre's annual International Summer School, which was established in the 1980s. They gain valuable experience about how cultures see each other and about how misrepresentation can arise.
