Power dressers

Article Abstract:

Women's clothing chain Laura Ashley now has six women on its nine-strong committee of executive directors, and the company has the highest proportion of female senior managers of any UK concern. This comes at a time when other women have also been appointed to high profile senior management positions. However, it must be remembered that there are still very few female directors in the UK. Laura Ashley has seen difficult conditions over recent years, and new chief executive Ann Iverson will face many challenges in reviving the company's fortunes.

Stepping from the shadow

Article Abstract:

South African President-elect Thabo Mbeki will take up his post at a time of great difficulty in South African politics and society. Blacks are becoming frustrated at the slow pace of change, while whites are worried about their privileges being eroded. Significant racial tension is beginning to re-emerge. Mbeki has been running South Africa from the sidelines since 1997, but little is really known about him. This means that many rumours are circulating and white paranoia is being fuelled.

The declining appeal of motherhood

Article Abstract:

The UK's childlessness rate has doubled over recent decades, and now one in five women are likely to die without having had a child. It is against this background that the Family Policy Studies Centre is soon to undertake the first national research into the reasons for the sharp fall in fertility. Research will particularly focus on whether women are choosing not to have children or whether they feel unable to because of social and economic pressures.
