Millions of shares, but not many laughs

Article Abstract:

Chairman of Slater Walker merchant bank Jim Slater was influential in 1972 but in 1974 the company collapsed. He was a qualified accountant who became deputy sales director of British Leyland. Illness made him seek an outside way of making money. He bought some shares and made 40,000 pounds sterling. He wrote a share-tipping column for the Daily Telegraph and joined forces with Peter Walker. He has also written children's books. He has donated to the charity Birthright and sponsored British chess.
