Premier clubs feel the pressure

Article Abstract:

A number of the UK's leading football clubs have seen a sharp fall in their merchandise sales. This is placing the clubs under strong financial pressure as wage bills and transfer fees rise. Football clubs are now facing a watershed as they adapt to new accounting methods and the government prepares to announce its decision on satellite television group BSkyB's 620 million pounds sterling bid for Manchester United. This club has already been forced to increase ticket prices by 14% to pay the wages of its leading players.

Drug firms demand right to advertise

Article Abstract:

The blanket ban in Europe on the advertising of medicines on television and in newspapers is likely to come under significant pressure as SmithKline Beecham (SKB) prepares to receive regulatory approval in the US for Avandia, its new diabetes treatment. SKB is expected to support the launch of Avandia in the US, where drug advertising is permitted, with a high-profile media campaign. There are concerns that direct-to-consumer advertising in Europe would lead to significant pressure on social security and health budgets.

Has Zeneca chosen wisely?

Article Abstract:

The planned 48 billion pounds sterling merger of Swedish pharmaceutical concern Astra with UK counterpart Zeneca will create the third-largest drug manufacturer in the world. Some observers are raising doubts about whether this deal will be entirely beneficial for Zeneca, which has for many years emphasized the benefits of independence. Astra is the manufacturer of the anti-ulcer treatment Losec, the world's best-selling prescription drug, but has also experienced a number of failures.
