Prescott orders urgent scrutiny of safety systems

Article Abstract:

UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has responded to the train crash near Paddington station, London, England, by ordering an independent investigation of the train warning protection system and the more expensive automatic train protection system. There will also be a public inquiry into the crash, headed by Royal Academy of Engineering Pres Sir David Davies. The inquiry will look at available safety systems, as well as considering the rise in the number of signals passed at danger.

Human error regarded as the most likely cause

Article Abstract:

It is possible that the train crash near Paddington station, London, England, in which 26 people are known to have been killed was caused by the driver of one of the trains missing a red light. Other possible explanations are signal failure or a mechanical fault such as defective brakes. The Railway Inspectorate will seek to establish the speed of each train on impact and the extent to which each train was braking.
