Pride and protest on the Mersey

Article Abstract:

A dispute in Sep 1995 led to the dismissal of 400 dockers in Liverpool, England, and their replacement with a new workforce. The dockers have since then been mounting a picket at the gates of the dockyard. Their action is deemed to be unofficial, and they have not been able to gain the support of their union, the TGWU. However, they have been backed up by dockers from across the world, and have received financial support from foreign unions. Dockers' families are experiencing considerable hardship, but they are determined to pursue their action, especially as there are now signs that Mersey Docks and Harbour Co may have to back down.

A hard pill to swallow

Article Abstract:

Around 15-20 British women every year die from the side-effects of the contraceptive pill, while others find their health ruined. More than 50 women who believe that their lives have been damaged by the contraceptive pill are now taking legal action against the manufacturers and against the doctors who prescribed it for them. One of the main problems seems to be that doctors are failing to properly monitor women who are taking the contraceptive poll or to identify symptoms of problems which the contraceptive pill could be causing.
