Turkey has seen impressive economic growth during the 1990s. However, it is still facing significant problems. Inflation remains very high, and it has not been successful in becoming a candidate for full European Union membership. Islamism is starting to have a significant influence on the country's political scene, and real political power remains with the military. Other difficulties include Kurdish terrorism, which brings the threat of attacks on tourists.
