Professor Ronald Robinson

Article Abstract:

Historian Ronald Robinson was elected a History scholar of St John's College, Cambridge, England, in 1938. He was posted to Coastal Command and sent for training in Rhodesia in 1941. He was a research officer in the African Studies Branch of the Colonial Office between 1947 and 1949. He was Lecturer in History at Cambridge University between 1953 and 1966, and Smuts Reader in the History of the British Commonwealth between 1966 and 1971. He moved to Oxford University, England, in 1971 as Beit Professor of the History of the British Commonwealth.

Professor Sir Harry Hinsley

Article Abstract:

Historian Harry Hinsley was recruited to the Government Code and Cipher School in Bletchley, England, while studying at Cambridge University, England. He became involved in the study of German naval wireless traffic, and this brought him into contact with Admiralty Intelligence. In 1943, he was sent to the US to negotiate the 'Brusa' codebreaking agreement. He became a very talented lecturer, and made a significant contribution to St John's College, Cambridge.

Henry Pelling

Article Abstract:

Historian Henry Pelling studied classics at St John's College, Cambridge, England. He took up a Fellowship at Queen's College, Oxford, England, in 1947, and saw the publication of nine of his 16 books between 1954 and 1963. He became Assistant Director of Research in History at St John's College, Cambridge, England, in 1966, and remained in Cambridge for the rest of his life. He gave the outward appearance of austerity, but was in fact secretly generous.
