Prospects

Article Abstract:

The value of UK's women's fragrances market is expected to decline by around 9% to 380 million pounds sterling in 2003, according to retail intelligence forecasts. The value decline started in 1995. The depression on both volumes and values was brought about by stiff competition in the sector as well as continuing pressure prices and changing buying patterns. Fine fragrances will also continue to dominate mass fragrances despite efforts by certain producers, particularly Coty, to revive consumers' interest on the mass sector.

Foreign trade

Article Abstract:

The UK enjoys a foreign trade surplus in perfumes, although the balance fell sharply in 1998. There was a 15% increase in imports of perfumes in 1998 to 47.1 million pounds sterling compared to the previous year. Exports have since dropped by 15% to 59.2 million pounds sterling in 1998 after experiencing a slight increase between 1994 and 1996 to 69.8 million pounds sterling. However, the UK faces a trade deficit in toilet waters, which increased by 67% in 1998 to 102.8 million pounds sterling.

Bath and shower preparations

Article Abstract:

Sales of bath and shower preparation products have experienced growth in the UK from 1993 to 1997. The growth has been correlated with consumer awareness in personal care and increases in the number of bathing and showering events. Moreover, market value has benefit from a trend towards added-value products, particularly those associated with skin care, and natural and aromatherapy-related products.
