Publish and be blessed

Article Abstract:

Publishing the books of the Bible individually with an introduction by a well-known writer has proved extremely successful, according to publisher Jamie Byng. His publishing house, Canongate, has already sold the rights to the series in the US, Spain, Australia, Italy, Greece and Germany, and expects strong sales in the pre-Christmas 1998 period. Byng has greatly enjoyed being involved in innovative projects at Canongate, and would not contemplate leaving this company for one of the large publishing houses.

Iran's puritanical censors tear classic novels to pieces

Article Abstract:

There are many difficulties associated with the censorship of books in Iran, according to publisher Shahla Lahigi. Publishers are particularly frustrated by the fact that they are not allowed to show where sections of books have been erased. There are also inconsistencies in the Iranian government's reactions to certain books. She was able to publish a book about two women during the Iran-Iraq war in English, but not in Persian. She highlights the particular success of women authors in Iran.

The last of the gentlemen publishers

Article Abstract:

There is a great danger of the English language disappearing under the American vernacular, according to John Calder, founder of Calder Publications, the last of the UK's independent publishers. He has recently begun a national campaign to raise awareness of the arts in the UK, believing that societies without the arts do not have the critical powers to identify poor administrators and governments. He is keen to encourage the UK government to positively support the arts.
