Puppy power for the Nineties

Article Abstract:

The five women who make up the music group the Spice Girls are all very keen to emphasize that women can be extremely powerful when they work together. They believe that girl power can bring total control and that they have gone beyond conventional feminism. However, their success has in fact been engineered by men. They have a male promoter, their book was ghostwritten by a man and their songs are co-written by men. They are promoting a female image which has actually been created by men.

Geisha girls of the literary world

Article Abstract:

The work done by the publicity staff of publishing houses is vital in ensuring that a particular book is given media coverage, made available in bookshops and promoted among the general public. The publicity staff, the vast majority of whom are women, fulfill many different roles, and regard themselves as constantly serving authors, editors, journalists and booksellers. They are respected for their marketing abilities, but not for their views about literature.

Bravissimo! Puccini for the people

Article Abstract:

Opera has gradually become much more accessible to ordinary Britons over recent years. There are now many community opera productions, and small opera companies are attracting large audiences. There is now extensive formal and informal contact between composers and poets, and this is generating many new operas. It is particularly significant that operas are now being written and performed in English. Furthermore, efforts are being made to reduce ticket prices.
