Quarter of all nurses come from overseas

Article Abstract:

The number of nurses on the register has fallen by 30% since 1988, according to the United Kingdom Central Council of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. Many nurses are leaving the profession because of growing workloads and poor pay, and young people are no longer attracted to nursing. One in four nurses is now recruited from abroad, with Australia being the largest single overseas source. Many nurses also come from countries including Finland, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland and Sweden.

Nice girls don't drink, do they?

Article Abstract:

There is now a growing number of women in the UK who drink to excess, according to research sociologist Elizabeth Ettore. She has found that alcoholism is often not recognised as a problem in women, and that women who drink to excess are treated very differently from men who do so. Women who drink heavily are seen as going against the traditional ideals of womanhood, such as purity and compliance, and it is still regarded as unacceptable for a woman to be drunk in public.
