Rafael Alberti

Article Abstract:

Poet, painter and performer Rafael Alberti grew up in the province of Cadiz, Spain, where he became familiar with the links between wine, music, song and poetry. He moved to Madrid, Spain, in 1917, and began copying works at the Prado. His first poetry was an elegy to his father, who died in 1920. His poems were subsequently published in the new magazine Horizonte. His first collection of poems won the Premio Nacional de Literatura in 1925. He joined student demonstrations in 1930, and until 1935 travelled around Europe. He founded the left-wing periodical Octubre in 1934. He lived in Argentina from 1940 until the late 1950s, when he travelled in Eastern Europe.

Miroslav Holub

Article Abstract:

Poet, immunologist and writer Miroslav Holub was conscripted to work as a labourer at the railway station in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, after graduating from high school in 1942. After the second world war, he studied at the Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and gained his MD in 1953. He was a researcher at the Public Health Research Institute in New York, NY, between 1965 and 1967 and at the Max Planck Institute of Immunology in Freiburg, Germany, between 1968 and 1969. He produced his first volume of poetry, 'Day Duty,' in 1958, the year in which he gained his PhD.

Louis-Rene des Forets

Article Abstract:

Poet, novelist and painter Louis-Rene des Forets was born in Paris, France, in 1918. His works included the novel 'Le Bavard,' published in 1946, and 'La Chambre des Enfants,' a collection of four short stories published in 1960.
