Read all about it: Murdoch effect reaches provinces

Article Abstract:

Significant changes have taken place in the regional publishing industry in the UK since 1995. Many medium-sized concerns have been taken over by the largest players, and this means that in circulation terms 20 publishers now control more than 90% of the regional press. There are still around 100 small newspaper publishers, of which 68 have only one title. These publishers are facing very strong competition from regional newspapers owned by large publishers, especially in terms of pricing.

Doctoring the books

Article Abstract:

Writing for tabloid newspapers gives access to a mass audience of readers who do not already have fixed opinions, according to Dr Vernon Coleman, who writes a weekly column for The People. He uses his columns to publicize his other ventures, which include premium-rate telephone lines, and he believes that this approach allows editors to pay him relatively little. He is strongly committed to campaigning against animal cruelty, and believes that it is important to try to change the world.
