Real life: fascinating, lucrative, and cheap

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common for television documentaries in the UK to focus on ordinary people doing ordinary jobs. Such documentaries are sure to attract very large audiences, and are cheap to produce. They play on natural human curiosity, and make use of the fact that the truth can be stranger than fiction. Documentaries planned for 1998 include 'Doctor's Orders,' which will look behind the scenes at a country surgery, and 'Premier Passions,' which will look at Sunderland football club.

Battle for the sofa surfers

Article Abstract:

There are a number of telecommunications, computer and television companies working together to bring together television and the Internet. Microsoft, for example, has linked with cable concern TCI to supply its Windows CE software for use in 5 million set-top boxes. It also owns WebTV, which has 300,000 subscribers in the US and claims to be on target to reach 1 million by the end of 1998. However, this is not enough subscribers to allow Microsoft to recoup its extensive investment.
