Rear-Admiral Hugh Balfour

Article Abstract:

Rear-Admiral Hugh Balfour was an officer from the British Navy who was involved in the Falklands conflict when he commanded Exeter in May 1982. Balfour's father was serving in the Mediterranean when the son was born in Malta in 1933. He joined the Service in 1951 and qualified in signals in 1959. He was seen as firm and fair, and pursued efficiency by driving ships' companies hard, but his ships were also seen as not unhappy. He favored satellite communications, and they proved useful in the Falklands campaign.
